Urban Oyster – Food Cart Walking Tour

Come have lunch with us on the streets of New York!

Increasingly, New York’s mobile food carts have moved from street meat (think tube steaks, lamb gyro) to more haute (if not haughty) culinary offerings like kati rolls, Jamaican jerk chicken and scrumptious baked goods!  Join us for a strolling lunch around Midtown to sample an international buffet of offerings, observe the constructive genius that cram full kitchens into improbably small carts, and to learn the stories of their proprietors–from struggling immigrants to culinary school drop-outs, to former 4-star restaurant chefs. Along the way, learn about the history of Midtown, the history of lunch, and the challenges of running these thriving but feverishly demanding small businesses.

Urban Oyster – Brewed in Brooklyn Tour

History in a pint glass.  Explore the story of beer in Brooklyn, past and present!

Toast your way through the past and present of beer brewing in Brooklyn! Once home to 48 breweries, this ancient and tasty trade disappeared from the borough in the 1970’s, only to be reborn in recent years with craft breweries leading the way. On this tour, we’ll take a behind-the-scenes look at how beer is made at one of Brooklyn’s three present-day breweries, explore the pre-prohibition era as we check out 19th century brewery buildings and share stories of the German immigrants who worked in them, and, of course, have plenty of craft beer and food along the way.

Tour Highlights:

  • A private tour of the Brooklyn Brewery on weekends or Greenpoint Beerworks on weekdays, maker of beer for Kelso of Brooklyn and Heartland Brewery Restaurants, plus a taste of their beers.
  • A look at two remaining 19th century brewery buildings that were once part of the old Brewers Row.
  • Lunch with pizza and lager beer – mmm….
  • Stories of brewing, bottling, and even bootlegging.
  • A beautiful cathedral-like church that was built by the German immigrants in the neighborhood.
  • A stop by ABC Beverage Distributors to learn about how beer gets to customers today versus in the past.
  • Tastings of traditional German beer and Brooklyn beer with gourmet small plates at Huckleberry Bar.

Length of tour: Approx. 3.5 hours.

Age Requirement: 21 years of age and older.

Admission: Tickets are $49 per person.  Advance ticket purchase is required.
