Taste some of the finest red and white wines, sparkling wines, muscat and port wines from Portugal, as well as some amazing traditional Portuguese food.

This tour takes place between Baixa and Chiado, two of the most emblematic sites in the historical centre of Lisbon.

We will enjoy petiscos (the Portuguese tapas), typically peixinhos da horta (deep fried green beans), pastéis de bacalhau with arroz de tomate (cod cakes with tomato rice), caldo verde (kale soup) with sausages, Iberian ham (you might know it as “prosciutto”), sheep cheese from Azeitão and tinned sardines in two of the best places in Chiado.

The next step in our tasting takes place in one of the finest cellars in Lisbon: there, we get to know two of  Portugal’s typical fortified wines, Porto or Moscatel  (a dessert wine made with muscat grapes). An expert explains to us the unique secrets of these wines.

We finish with a great custard tart.

Price: 80 euros (a 10 percent supplement may apply if a tour has only two persons)

Hours: Three and a half hours, Monday to Saturday.

Journalist and guide Célia Pedroso really knows her food — in fact, she’s even co-authored a book (in English) called “Eat Portugal.” Exploring Lisbon with Célia took me to places I never would have found on my own. It was like spending the afternoon with a new Portugese friend, which Célia was by the end of the day!

We tasted iconic Portugese foods, like the delicious kale soup (which I’ll be making from the recipe in Célia’s book) and the famous pastel de nata custard tarts (the best version I had on my entire trip). I also learned about Portugal’s gourmet tinned fish and had my first-ever tinned sardines at a restaurant — delicious, and beautifully presented.

Célia explained the history and story behind many foods, and also introduced me to experts along the way, including one stop where we got a real education as we tasted ports.

I learned that Iberian ham isn’t limited to Spain; Portugal also has a delicious version. I got a great introduction to Portugal’s wines and cheeses, too. The Portugese “tapas” were delicious, including cod cakes and tempura green beans (did you know the Portugese introduced the tempura cooking technique to Japan?).

Célia makes sure that wine accompanies many of the tastings, and we got to sample a range of them, from vinho verde to sparkling to red.

In addition to stops at several food shops, we were seated at tables in two trendy restaurants for our tastings — so the pacing of walking, standing and sitting was very comfortable. Great conversations about food fueled our appetites and it was a real pleasure to spend time with such a knowledgable and fun food authority.

Célia and her partner offer a number of different tours, including one outside of Lisbon where you get to make cheese with an artisanal cheesemaker. Yes, please! I wouldn’t hesitate to take any of Célia’s tours after my experience on the Gourmet Tour.

    Highly recommended!
