Sure, there are plenty of places you can eat in Hong Kong as a tourist – but if you want to get away from the tourist spots and into “real people” territory, this is a fantastic tour! Although you’ll meet at a convenient subway stop, there’s nary a tourist in sight, and most of the signage and menus are in Chinese. The tour visits the sorts of places you’d love to try, but would have a tough time managing unless you had your own personal translator – which, of course, this tour provides.

Our guide, Yammy, was terrific! Not only was she appropriately named, she really shared the stories behind each establishment, as well as the neighborhood history, complete with photos she carried. We also went into some fascinating non-food stores, including a notions and trim shop, medicinal shop and a cutlery shop.

In many of the stops, we were able to sit down, which was nice. The food ranged from a warm-out-of-the-oven pineapple bun to pasta-like rice rolls to luscious roast pork to noodles to an unusual tofu pudding to traditional cookies. Everything was thoroughly delicious, and the food was plentiful enough that it certainly took the place of lunch.

The tour was beautifully coordinated and timed; obviously the itinerary was well-planned and our guide knew it well. I look forward to taking Hong Kong Foodie’s other tours someday! Highly recommended!
