Why a food tour?

A food or culinary tour is a perfect way to immerse yourself into the culture of a city. Juneau is home to some of the finest seafood and eateries in Southeast Alaska and our guides, locals who live here year-round, are eager to share these establishments with you. They will colorfully detail some of Juneau’s history and culture as you stroll along the beautiful streets of downtown Juneau. Our guides will also make recommendations for great restaurants and things to do while you are visiting Juneau.  Foodies don’t dismay, there will be lots of delectable Alaskan fare. Be prepared for great food and enjoyable conversation in a warm and personal setting.

What to expect

Once you purchase your ticket, you will be told where to meet your guide. A brief introduction is given, then the fun begins! Each tour combines walking to tasting locations, eating delicious local foods, and learning about the lively history and culture that makes Juneau so special. Each participant will be provided a reusable shopping bag as well as bottled water.

In addition to fantastic food, Juneau Food Tours includes fun facts about Alaska’s capital city. For example, you will “meet” Patsy Ann, Juneau’s official canine greeter. At the “Before I Die” blackboard, you will have the opportunity to share what’s on your bucket list. Landmarks include the new Walter Soboleff Center, which features beautiful Alaska Native artwork, and the Alaska Commercial Fishermen’s Memorial, which is dedicated to the men and women who have given their lives to the Alaska commercial fishing industry.

Turkish Flavours: In the Kitchen with Selin

Home cooking in a real Turkish home by a native home chef!

We say “Make yourselves at home” and we mean it! Today Turkey’s culinary legacy is a tapestry of tastes and pleasure, seasoned with Ottoman indulgence and refreshed by Anatolian inspiration. Learn the secrets of a cuisine relished within all corners of Turkey but rarely experienced by outsiders. Join Selin to teach you how to make a traditional home-cooked Turkish meal.

After we meet we will walk through the reknown Spice Market for tastings and stop for a private turkish spices tasting session in a shop that has been there since five generations. Then we will take a short scenic ferry ride over the Bosphorus to the Asian side of Istanbul. We will join Selin in her new home on the Asian side of Istanbul and cook a traditional home-cooked Turkish meal together.

For lunch, you will savor what you have cooked! A six course menu you have prepared, accompanied with boutique Turkish wines.

Recipes vary according to the season, utilizing only the freshest ingredients available and providing you with a deeply individual Turkish experience . As a member of Slow Food, Selin’s focus is on healthy locally sourced, fresh, artisan, and sustainable food. Dishes are approachable and easy to replicate in your home country.

Vegetarian and gluten free Turkish food is not a challenging option for us – it’s easy being green and creating exciting Turkish vegetarian and gluten free recipes at Turkish Flavours.

Upon request Turkish – Sephardic dishes can also be included to the menu from Selin’s family recipes.

The best part is the conclusion: Tasting your creations!

Classes are organized in Selin’s Home Kitchen. Instruction is in English or French. Recipes are geared to the home cook. Detailed recipe booklets are offered to take away and try recipes once back at home. Selin shops daily for her groceries so the ingredients are seasonal and fresh.

A sample menu might include:

  • Crispy cheese and herb filled pastry rolls or flaky Turkish borek with feta and herb filling or zucchini flan with feta cheese and herbs
  • Bulgur wheat salad- Kısır or Carrots with a garlic infused in yogurt and tahini dressing or Cacik
  • Leeks, green beans or artichokes in olive oil
  • Purslane salad with mint and yoghurt or Green Olive Salad with sumac and pomegranate molasses
  • Spicy bulgur pilaf or Tomato rice pilaf or pilaf with Orzo
  • Split Belly Eggplant stuffed with meat – Karniyarik or Aromatic Rice Stuffed Bell Peppers with Olive Oil or Zucchini stuffed with meat, rice and herbs in a tomato sauce or Baked Sea Bass with shrimp and vegetables or Eggplant in Earthenware casserole with lamb or Swiss Chard rolls
  • Apricots stuffed with Kaymak (clotted cream) or Roasted Figs infused in honey with bay leaves or Revani – Turkish Semolina sponge cake

We’re Boston’s original chocolate walking tour, founded by Harvard grad and chocolate maniac Valerie Beck. Enjoy a guided walking and tasting tour of select chocolate shops and other chocolate locations on and near Boston’s vibrant Newbury Street.

Join us for a Chicago Chocolate Tour, and enjoy a guided walking and tasting tour to select chocolate shops, bakeries, and cafes, including secret chocolate treasures, plus famous favorites!

We tour all year round, 52 weeks a year, and our tours are exciting and inviting. Public tours are $40 per person (please see below for schedules), and private tours are also available.

Chicago Chocolate Tour is a fun and educational 2 1/2 to 3 hour guided walking and tasting tour of select chocolate shops, bakeries, and cafes, including traditional and non-traditional chocolate locations. You’ll visit some of Chicago’s most popular chocolate stores, and some of the city’s secret chocolate treasures, as you delve deeply into the rich history of chocolate and discover chocolate in expected as well as surprising places.
