Fitz & Follwell: Flavours of the “Main” – Montreal, Canada

It may have been the St. Lawrence River that brought them here, but it was St. Lawrence Boulevard that kept them.

For three centuries, Montreal immigrants have settled along the city’s main boulevard, known interchangeably as St. Lawrence, St. Laurent, or “The Main.” French, British, Chinese, Eastern European, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Latin American and North African–all have found their time and place on this historic street. Today, in lively shops, cafes and market stands, they continue to share their culinary heritage.

Offered in two separate segments or together in one back-to-back taste extrodinaire, this action-packed Tasting Tour traces the history of each cultural community with visits to landmarks, food emporiums, delicatessens, specialty shops, lunch counters, restaurants, cafes, and marketplaces that have shaped it.

The first segment samples our way through Chinatown, the city’s former “Red Light” and current “Supper Club” districts, the former Jewish Quarter, and Little Portugal. The second segment leaves Little Portugal with stops in Mile-End, and Little Italy, with a climactic finish at the Jean-Talon Market, North America’s largest open-air market (where we taste the best of Quebec’s ‘cuisine du terroir’).

Along the way, we’ll meet shop owners, hear their stories and learn about iconic local figures such as Montreal’s famous ‘Striptease’ dancer Lili St. Cyr and master musician, poet and St. Lawrence Boulevard resident Leonard Cohen.

Join us for this extended, unconventional lunch, filled with signature Montreal flavours. Sweet, salty, savoury, and thirst-quenching– samples will change with the seasons and a microbrew beer in the summer may become ice-cider in the winter–but Montreal’s famous smoked meat and bagels will remain standard. The rest is a surprise!

Best for: Food lovers with a taste for variety and culture

* Special Price offered for doing both segments of the tour together back-to-back!  Choose the option “Full Tour”!  The special price is also offered if you would prefer to do Segment #1 one day, and Segment #2 the following day! *
