Bangkok Food Tours: Offbeat Floating Markets Food Tour – Bangkok, Thailand

Rivers and canals play an important part of traditional Thai life. On this full day excursion, we bring you back in time to experience off-beat floating markets and historical communities and to taste unique local delicacies made with freshest local ingredients.

With only an hour drive from Bangkok, we will be in Samut Songkram, the last Venice of Thailand. Take a morning stop at Tha Kha floating market, where local farmers meet to exchange their produces. A row boat slowly brings you to explore ordinary Thai life by the canals. Visit the original coconut sugar makers to learn fascinating sugar-making technique. Taste farm-fresh local specialties such as roasted banana with sweet dip, fresh palm-sugar juice, and local seasonal fruit.

We then head for lunch at the charming Bang Noi market. As this area of Thailand produces arguably the most delicious mackerel, we will try a pair of mackerel fried rice with local fruit juice. Relax with a short session of Thai traditional massage before we continue our journey.

In the afternoon, visit locally famous Amphawa floating market. The market is one of the best spots to sample Thai snacks and sweets. Plenty of tasting items are waiting for you to try, including Thai fruit flavor ice cream, crispy noodles with tamarind sauce, spicy fish cake, and many more.

En route the tour we will stop at the only market in the world that is set up on train track. See a thing that will make you say “wow”. We also bring you to the marvelous “unseen in Thailand” Bang Gung temple.

We take to the streets to explore our home neighbourhood.  On our Mt Eden Village Foodie Walking Tour and Gourmet Lunch you will meet the many interesting food suppliers and food makers in this historic, bustling village.  Tour gathering point is the iconic Fraser’s cafe, located on the corner of Mt Eden Road and Stokes Road.

You will meet the wonderful people who own the businesses – many family-owned.  Artisan bakeries, family-run fruit shop, tea shop, packed delicatessen, old-fashioned butchery, boutique cake shops are all visited on the tour – with lots of tastings along the way! The Tour concludes with a two-course gourmet lunch with glass of wine at the award-winning Molten Restaurant.

About Mt Eden Village:
Mt Eden Village is conveniently located in the central urban Auckland area.  It is only a short 15-minute bus ride on #274 or #277 bus from the Britomart transportation area in Downtown Auckland.  The Village itself is very compact and many of the shops that we visit are located next door to each other.  There are many other interesting shops to browse in the Village after the tour.

Thai culinary carving expertise is arguably unsurpassed for skill and finesse. Our food carving instructors teach the basics of this beloved Thai art in (3) three-hour sessions held on consecutive days, for a total of nine hours of hands-on instruction.

You will learn food carving technique and two ornate flower patterns on Days 1 and 2. We use easy-to-carve large fleshy fruits such as watermelon and cantaloupe, and also show you how to carve these patterns on the small surfaces found on vegetables such as carrots and potatoes. On Day 3 you learn garnishes including cucumbers, tomatoes, chilies, and spring onions.

Your carving tool, our 38 page step-by-step instructional booklet with over 135 color photos, and a souvenir SITCA apron are included in the 4,950 baht we charge for this fascinating nine hour course.

One-day course

For those with limited time we offer a one-day course in the Thai style art of carving decorative vegetables for use as plate garnishes. The cost is 2,000 baht and a custom carving knife is included.

On our Moroccan culinary vacation you’ll learn about the tools of a Moroccan kitchen, most notably the Berber tajine, where ingredients are layered one upon the other to create a scrumptious stew, and about the exotic array of spices that contribute to the rich flavors.
