We take to the streets to explore our home neighbourhood.  On our Mt Eden Village Foodie Walking Tour and Gourmet Lunch you will meet the many interesting food suppliers and food makers in this historic, bustling village.  Tour gathering point is the iconic Fraser’s cafe, located on the corner of Mt Eden Road and Stokes Road.

You will meet the wonderful people who own the businesses – many family-owned.  Artisan bakeries, family-run fruit shop, tea shop, packed delicatessen, old-fashioned butchery, boutique cake shops are all visited on the tour – with lots of tastings along the way! The Tour concludes with a two-course gourmet lunch with glass of wine at the award-winning Molten Restaurant.

About Mt Eden Village:
Mt Eden Village is conveniently located in the central urban Auckland area.  It is only a short 15-minute bus ride on #274 or #277 bus from the Britomart transportation area in Downtown Auckland.  The Village itself is very compact and many of the shops that we visit are located next door to each other.  There are many other interesting shops to browse in the Village after the tour.

Jeff Koehler: Marrakech Gourmet Walking Tour & Tasting Lunch – Marrakech, Morocco

Within the ancient walls of Marrakech resides the city’s culinary soul: the medina and souqs, the communal bread ovens and workshops, mounds of olives, aromatic herbs, cubbyholes offering spice concoctions with dozens of components…. It is here, among these raw materials, that the magic of this remarkable cuisine begins.

In conjunction with the legendary restaurant, riad-hotel, and cooking school La Maison Arabe, Moroccan cookbook author Jeff Koehler will begin leading a series of private and exclusive gourmet walking tours followed by a traditional, multi-course tasting menu. The first series will take place in October 2012, and happen about three or so times a year.

Join Jeff on a winding stroll through Marrakech’s narrow lanes to learn how ingredients come to create, even define, one of the world’s great cuisines. While hearing about food’s deeply-rooted role in Moroccan culture, you will sample different date varieties from the Sahara and small, pointed almonds from the High Atlas, get a ras al hanout spice blend designed exclusively for your tastes ground in front of you, maybe even pick up some hand-carved wooden spoons or an unglazed tagine. Then sit down with some ornate pastries in a café at the edge of the frenetic Djemma el Fna to witness one of the world’s most exhilarating sights over sweet mint tea.

Return to La Maison Arabe for lunch, an unhurried, multi-course tasting menu specifically created for the tour. Beginning with stuffed savory pastries and a wide selection of fresh and “cooked” salads, you will savor Moroccan flavors at their finest while learning from Jeff how these dishes are prepared and their role at the family table. Sample four different tagines—including a sublime one with lamb, candied orange peel, and saffron threads from the book—as well as two types of couscous, a Friday staple in every Moroccan home. Finish with traditional desserts, pastries, and, of course, mint tea, poured high from above the table. The courses are paired with top Moroccan wines, whose industry dates back some 2,500 yeas and is experiencing a breathtaking revival.

Along with a signed copy of Jeff’s book, you will take away an understanding of the tightly-linked relationship between food and culture in Morocco. It is, simply, the best way to get into, discovery, and appreciate this complex, fascinating place.

Jeff has travelled for many years in the region since moving to Spain in 1996. His most recent cookbook is Morocco: A Culinary Journey with Recipes from the Spice-Scented Markets of Marrakech to the Date-Filled Oasis of Zagora. His writing, recipes, and photographs have appeared in Saveur, Food & Wine, Gourmet, Afar, Men’s Journal, Virtuoso Life, the Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times, and have been selected for Best Food Writing 2010. He is also the author and photographer of La Paella, which has become the standard work on Spain’s iconic dish, and Rice, Pasta, Couscous. In Barcelona, he leads popular private gourmet walking tours and tastings.

The International Kitchen: Moroccan Flavors Tour – Morocco

About the location: Many food experts say that Morocco has the best cuisine in Africa, perhaps even in the top five of the world. From the narrow streets in the ancient medinas to the Berber villages down south, Morocco is a mysterious and alluring destination and should definitely be on your “must visit” list. While experiencing this diverse and yet culturally rich country, your senses will be stimulated; while learning, cooking, and tasting the flavorful tagines, salads and patisseries of Morocco.

About the lessons: This tour includes four cooking classes, each totally different in their styles; from cooking in a traditional dar (house), to cooking over the charcoal in the Berber village. Your classes will be taught by a number of different chefs, each with vast experience in Moroccan cuisine. Each of our teachers speaks fluent English and French, and their establishments are licensed by the government. After spending the days exploring Morocco, you will return to your accommodations (hotels or riads) for the evening.

Riads are beautifully restored houses, usually with a garden inside, that offer the perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and tradition. Riad Fez: Cooking Classes – Fez, Morocco

Moroccan cuisine is often considered one of the best in the world. It is known by a wide variety of dishes: couscous, tagines, pastilla and barbecue. Fez is said to be par excellence  the gastronomic city of Morocco. Our chef invites you to share her passion and secrets in a friendly and warm atmosphere.

Provided in the main kitchen of the Riad, workshops are organized by groups of 2 to 4 people to ensure each participant a personalized welcome in a nice ambiance. The guests will learn how to prepare an appetizer, main course and dessert. They will begin with a visit of the souks with our chef and a guide to buy good and fresh products.

At the end of each session, the guests will taste the dishes they have prepared during a friendly lunch on the terrace overlooking the Medina or in the dining room of the Riad. A list of recipes dedicated by our chefs will be given at the end of the course to share a grain of Morocco at home, with family or friends.

La Maison Arabe: Cooking Workshops – Marrakech, Morocco

The legendary restaurant at La Maison Arabe today offers cooking workshops designed for the amateur and professional alike.

The workshops are conducted by a dada (traditional Moroccan cook) or a chef from our Moroccan restaurant, and are held at the hotel. Small groups of maximum 10 participants work alongside a translator (Arabic/English/French), using easy-to-use modern equipment found in everyday kitchens. At the end of each workshop, participants dine on the meal they have prepared. At a typical half-day workshop, one learns to prepare an appetizer and a main dish, or a main dish and dessert. Hong Kong Foodie: Central & Sheung Wan Foodie Tour – Hong Kong, China

Taste your way through the old neighborhoods of Central and Sheung Wan. Along the 3.5-hour food tour, discover some of Hong Kong’s favorite food as you stroll along Hong Kong’s side streets and learn about how this area evolved from a fishing village to the colonial administration district to today’s international financial center. There will be six tasting locations and all food will be included in the ticket price of HK$600.

Savor the Food — Our journey will take us to six family-run tasting locations in the Central and Sheung Wan neighborhoods.  Each eatery has been specially selected not only to represent the best examples of Hong Kong cuisine but also for the unique and interesting stories behind them.  Samples of Hong Kong food and drinks are included in the ticket price.  We recommend that you eat a hearty breakfast or a light, early lunch before the food tour.  If you have any dietary preferences or restrictions, please indicate when you purchase your tickets.  Here’s a preview of what you’ll experience at our tasting locations:

Wonton Noodle Shop:  Mouth-watering wontons with fresh shrimp and noodles, served in soup prepared for hours from a family recipe will be the highlight of our first stop.  You will learn about what makes the wonton and the soup so special.

Roast Meat Restaurant:  Taste some succulent barbecued pork rice and find out how the owner can roast such juicy meat.

Delhi Food Tours: Dinner Discovery Package – New Delhi, India

Delhi Food Tours (DFT) provides customized food tours that give you opportunity to explore a variety of Indian cuisines as they can only be found in the local eateries of New Delhi. Each tour consists of tastings at 4-6 different restaurants along with a Tea Tasting conducted under the guidance of a professional tea taster. The idea is to experience food from across India within the geographical confines of New Delhi.

DFT offers both lunch and dinner tours that are available 7 days a week.

Unlike typical tour companies, DFT conducts tours for groups of 2-8 people per meal with a minimum of one food guide per 4 people. Thanks to our focus on small groups; tours are customized on the basis of spice tolerance, allergies, and sensitivities of each guest. All tours are conducted by Prashant and/or Ayesha personally (refer to the ‘Meet the Foodaholics’ page).

This dinner tour is all about experiencing Delhi by night. While some of our preferred venues are similar to those of our Discovery Lunch Package, there are a few places included here that are only open at night. Here you can experience mouth watering kabab rolls, cooked on a charcoal grill served in open air seating, Egg paranthas (handrolled unleavened bread) from Delhi’s famous roadside parantha guy, mouth watering biryani cooked and served in sealed claypots, Delhi’s famous butter chicken and Dal Makhani, vegetarian snacks from West India and Sweets from everywhere!

This tour takes approximately 2-3 hours. Subject to your location, we will pick you up at 7 PM.

Pick up/drop from within South and Central Delhi (except Karol Bagh): This tour costs Rs. 4000 per person which is approximately US$ 80. This includes transport, food and non-alcoholic drinks.

Pick up/drop from anywhere in Gurgaon or Noida: This tour costs Rs. 5500 per person which is approximately US$ 105. This includes transport, food and non-alcoholic drinks.

The fixed price includes unlimited food, soft drinks, bottled water, hand sanitizer, wet wipes and transport (subject to location).

Guidelines for the tours:

  • All prices include transport. If you are staying within South or Central Delhi (except Karol Bagh) or taking the Gurgaon/Noida package, the car/van will pick you up from your hotel, be with you for the entire duration of your tour and then drop you back to your hotel:  If you are staying elsewhere, we will pick you up from and drop you to a mutually agreed pick up point.
  • All tours will be conducted by Prashant and/or Ayesha.
  • Skipping the preceding meal is highly advisable.
  • Dress code applicable for Standard Lunch, Standard Dinner and Lunch outside Delhi: Ladies are requested to dress conservatively. Shorts, short skirts and spaghetti straps are to be avoided. Elastic is highly recommended across all packages.
  • There are no limits on the number of people we can cater to on a given package. However all packages can be arranged on an exclusive and private basis at an extra cost, if there are no previous bookings for that date.
