You won’t find a more passionate and energetic guide than André of Taste Porto. “We are going to have a whole day’s food in 3.5 hours, with breakfast, lunch and a late nite snack!” he said. He was true to his word. Our tour began with morning pastries and ended with wine, amazing cheeses, olives and sausages at a taberna.

In between, there were stops at a local coffee house, a visit to the historic food market (check out the monster tomatoes!), an artisanal hot sandwich from an atmospheric spot you’d never find on your own, Jewish sausages with a secret, chats with young entrepreneurs who are focused on highlighting the wealth of local food traditions, and some wicked eclairs.

Along the way, André wove in a bit of history and pointed out his favorite tile murals and other attractions, including a spectacular viewpoint over the city and river, plus what has to be the world’s most beautiful bookstore.

While the tour covers a fair amount of ground, most of the stops offer seating, so there’s plenty of opportunity to rest your feet. You will get lots of food on this tour, so plan accordingly. Definitely don’t eat for several hours before taking it – and lighter eaters may not need any other food that day!

I’d recommend that you take this tour as soon as possible after arriving in Porto, because it’s the perfect orientation to the city. Taste Porto also provides suggestions for additional eating spots, and even sends along lodging suggestions when you sign up for a tour.

The locals who operate Taste Porto are extremely well-organized, passionate, great communicators and seem to have thought of everything. I was really surprised to find out that, when I took the tour in October of 2013, they had only been operating for a couple of months!

    Very highly recommended!

We did this tour in November. It was wonderful and should not be missed on your trip to Porto!
